A capture fails for three repeatable reasons: the target is at full HP, you knock it out, or you throw a disc that the on-screen chance says is a poor fit. Fix those before you blame luck.
Battle capture
- Start the encounter from tall grass or another battle tile.
- Lower HP without knocking the Loomian out. Spare is the reliable tool because it leaves the target at 1 HP.
- Add sleep or paralysis when your team has it. Do this before the disc, not after you are out of discs.
- Throw a Capture Disc. If the Loomian breaks out, you spent that disc. Have a second stack before a rare target.
- If the party is full, the catch still needs a box. Open storage before you hunt something you cannot bear to release.
STAB and super-effective moves make Spare harder to time if you only have a strong attack. Lead with a Loomian that can chip, or switch to a weaker move, then Spare on the last action.
Field capture on Route 9
On Route 9 you can skip the battle. Select the disc, aim until the chance, level, and gender appear, and throw. A miss returns. A hit that fails still consumes the disc. New catches default into Recent Captures, with an option to fill the party first.
Use battle capture when you need a status ailment or when Field Disc Mode is not available on that route. Use field capture when you are logging many Route 9 species and do not need to weaken them first.
Disc choice
The game shows the chance for the equipped disc while you aim in Field Disc Mode. Read that number. A stronger disc is worth using on a gleaming, a roaming, or a species you do not have yet. A common route species does not need your best stack.
After the catch
Gleaming, Personality, and Unique Points are separate rolls. A gleaming with a poor Personality is still a gleaming. Decide whether to keep it as a collectible or rally a battle copy later. The laboratory beginner cannot be traded, so do not plan to move that specific Loomian through the Trade Resort.
